A business can have campaigns running, content being produced, agencies on retainers and a busy marketing calendar without having a clear marketing direction.
Sales has one set of priorities. Marketing has another. Brand, proposition and demand decisions happen separately. Agencies are doing what they were briefed to do, but nobody is deciding whether those are still the right briefs. Internal marketers are delivering work without enough senior cover to make the bigger calls.
The problem is rarely a lack of activity.
It is that nobody has clear responsibility for making marketing make sense as a whole.
That is the gap fractional marketing leadership is designed to fill.
The exact work depends on what the business needs, but the responsibility is broader than a strategy project or a monthly advisory call.
I may be working with the leadership team on commercial priorities one day and helping an internal marketer or agency make an important piece of work better the next.
setting marketing direction and priorities;
building and maintaining the marketing plan;
bringing sales, marketing and leadership into better alignment;
sharpening positioning, proposition and go-to-market;
directing demand generation, campaigns and ABM;
managing or challenging agencies and specialist suppliers;
improving measurement, CRM and marketing systems;
creating a more useful operating rhythm;
making senior calls when priorities compete;
getting directly involved in important work where it helps move things forward.
The point is not to reproduce a full-time Marketing Director role in fewer days.
It is to provide genuine senior leadership, concentrated where the business needs it.
A clear answer to what marketing is there to do.
Fewer competing priorities and one joined-up marketing plan.
Better briefs for internal teams, agencies and suppliers.
Sales and marketing working against the same commercial priorities.
Important decisions getting made rather than drifting between functions.
And somebody senior accountable for keeping the whole thing together.
What working together looks like
Fractional leadership works best when I am close enough to the business to understand what is changing and make decisions with the people who matter.
That normally means a regular commitment rather than occasional consultancy.
I become part of the working rhythm: leadership conversations, planning, priorities, important reviews and the points where senior marketing judgement is required.
There may be hands-on delivery as part of that. There often is.
But Tucker Marketing is not an outsourced production department. The job is to lead the function and make the available capability work better.
If you already have experienced marketing leadership and need senior ownership of one defined challenge, look at additional senior capacity.
If you are an owner-led business that mainly needs experienced judgement and a workable marketing structure, marketing advisory may be enough.
